This December, I realized my long-time dream of visiting Egypt. I enjoyed some aspects of Egypt very much, while I hated some others. I think this would be a typical reaction of most visitors to Egypt. The good side is of course the almost unbelievable number and quality of historical relics -- pyramids, sphinx, the Karnak Temple, the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Valley of the Kings, the treasures of Tutankhamun in the Egyptian Museum, etc., etc., that are breath-taking. The bad side is the congestion, pollution, agressive merchants, touts and numerous scams. I try to forget about the bad side and talk only about the interesting sites that I visited. Photo number 1 is an obligatory one of the pyramids at Giza. There are three major ones there, namely, Khufu's, Khafre's and Menkaure's. There are also several smaller pyramids for queens. The largest one (Khufu's) is about 140m high, each side is 230m long, and it is supposed to contain 2.3 million limestone blocks. And yet, the difference between the longest and shortest sides is only 20cm! On closeup, it is not as smooth as it looks. (Pls. see the second photo.) It boggles your mind when you think that it was built over 4,500 years ago!
I did a four-day Nile cruise, starting at Aswan and ending at Luxor. The cruise ship normally sails at night, and when you get up in the morning, you are at the next port from which to disembark for sight-seeing. I first flew to Aswan from Cairo. After putting my luggages on board, I was taken to a few sight-seeing spots, including the Temple of Phillae. On the second day, I visited Kom Ombo and Edfu. The third day was the highlight of my cruise. The cruise ship was anchored at the port of Luxor. On the West Bank, which is sometimes called Thebes, I visited the tombs of Ramses I, III, and IX in the Valley of the Kings, but the best was the Temple of Hatshepsut. Hatshepsut was the first female pharao. Its architecture is so modern that it wouldn't look out of place in the middle of New York City today. On the East Bank, there is that famous Karnak Temple. In the "hypostyle" hall, there are 134 huge pillars that are up to 21 meters tall. I think no picture could convey the awe that you feel looking at them.
I could go on and on, but I will let the photos talk. The Solar barque (boat) was built by the son of Khufu for the father to be able to sail in his next life.
